George Carey also issued a warning against "dirty tricks" to derail the law in the House of Lords.

The peer, 89, made headlines a decade ago when he abandoned his opposition to assisted dying, saying the "old philosophical certainties have collapsed in the face of the reality of needless suffering".

He now hopes the right to die for people with six months to live will unlock a more caring society.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill cleared its first hurdle in the House of Commons on Friday by 330 votes to 275. But this is just the start of its journey into law.

The Daily Express Give Us Our Last Rites campaign has called for assisted dying to be made legal.

Lord Carey said: "People would be very disgusted if there are dirty tricks.
