Decision looming on works to fix riverside wall after collapse

A DECISION on replacing or repairing a riverside wall in Ystradgynlais that partially collapsed 18 months ago will be taken by a senior Powys councillor.

Cabinet member for highways, transport and recycling, (HTR) Cllr Jackie Charlton has received four options and will decide the “most appropriate” way forward that “best meets” Powys Council's legal obligations regarding the Llys Tawel river wall in the town.

The wall sits behind four properties at Llys Tawel on the western bank of the River Tawe as it flows through this section of the town.

The report states that while the wall spans 100 metres in length, 30 metres of the structure gave way on February 1, last year.

The report indicates that the remaining structure displays clear signs of “scour” - meaning that its foundations may be compromised by soil erosion.

Legal disputes arose regarding ownership of the wall, with Powys council ultimately accepting responsibility for it. Repair options are projected to cost between £382,000 and £1 million.
