The global rise of PSL talent

Soccer Laduma

January 29, 2026

The Betway Premiership has transformed from an overlooked backwater into one of Africa’s most productive fishing ponds for international talent scouts.

For decades, South African football has been celebrated for its flair, resilience and unique identity. Yet, for much of that time, the country’s players were often overlooked in the global transfer market, overshadowed by the seemingly endless conveyor belt of talent from West Africa and North Africa. That narrative is changing and changing fast. The recent wave of transfers involving local players to Europe, Asia, and North America signals a new era in which South African footballers are not only recognised but actively sought after. With Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s blockbuster move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire and Puso Dithejane’s subsequent switch to the same Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit, the spotlight has firmly shifted to South Africa as a fertile ground for overseas recruitment. Soccer Laduma’s Delmain Faver explores the growing demand for South African players, the factors driving this surge, and what it means for the PSL, Bafana Bafana and the global football ecosystem.

leagues. His move represents the new generation of players bypassing traditional pathways to reach European football directly. These moves collectively paint a picture of a football nation whose players are no longer confined to domestic stardom but are increasingly part of the global conversation.

Historical context

To understand the significance of this current wave, it's essential to examine South Africa’s recent history in player exports. The early 2000s saw players like Benni McCarthy, Steven Pienaar and Quinton Fortune establishing South African credentials in top European leagues. However, the subsequent decade brought a noticeable drought in overseas moves, with most South African players remaining in domestic competition or moving to lower-tier international leagues.

We don't respect each other's history

Domestic football has been back in full swing since last week and it has been interesting to see how the AFCON break has affected some teams. The CAF inter-club competitions have also kept our teams active, and I want to wish all our three participants, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC all the best in their respective matches this weekend.

Most dreams don't come true

Not many African players can claim to have played for Manchester United, and those who had the honour will regard the experience as a dream come true.

I won't lie to you

From Reiger Park's dusty pitches to the bright lights of the UEFA Champions League, Shandre Campbell's rise has been as rapid as it has been grounded. Still a teenager, the Club Brugge winger has already rubbed shoulders with Africa's elite at the Africa Cup of Nations, earned promotion to a European first team and carried the hopes of a football-mad nation eager to see its next star emerge. Though he didn't feature on the pitch in Morocco, his inclusion in Bafana Bafana's squad signalled a future in motion. In part one of this interview with Soccer Laduma's Delmain Faver, Campbell opens up about growth, faith and chasing bigger dreams.

I've found a home

Fortune Makaringe has been away from professional football for a little over half a year, but he is finally back with a move to the Motsepe Foundation Championship with ambitious outfit Leicesterford City, who have signed him on a deal until the end of the season. Makaringe, who left Cape Town City after they got relegated from the Betway Premiership last season, made his debut for Leicesterford against The Bees, playing 45 minutes as the club registered a much-needed 2-1 win to start 2026 on a high. Soccer Laduma’s Tshepang Mailwane went to Leicesterford’s training in Pretoria to talk to the former Orlando Pirates midfielder about joining the club and why it took a while before he found a new home.
