Welcome back, Soccer Laduma readers and compliments of the New Year!

I hope we are all back in one piece and that we thoroughly enjoyed the festive break with loved ones. I hope and trust that you have not forgotten to thank the Man Above who made it all possible for us to be here today and do what we love to do. Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns on their crucial CAF Champions League semi-final first leg win away to Esperance on Sunday night. It was a gutsy performance by the Brazilians as they showed a lot of character against such a hostile crowd. The atmosphere was unbelievable as Esperance supporters came out in their numbers to try and intimidate their visitors, but the Chloorkop-based team stood their ground and remained resolute.

More eyes are on women's football
Nthabeleng “Dunga” Modiko’s job as the head coach of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Women’s FC doesn’t just entail leading the first team in the Hollywoodbets Super League, the Varsity Cup and the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Women’s Football Championships. She’s also in charge of their Sasol League and Local Football Association (LFA) sides. Last year the Kroonstad-born coach was named USSA Women’s Football Championships Coach of the Tournament after leading her side to victory. She was also in charge of the UJ side that finished seventh in the Hollywoodbets Super League. In this interview with Soccer Laduma’s Mzoxolo Budaza, the former Banyana Banyana captain opens up about her duties at UJ, what women’s football needs and the role played by supporters in the development of community women’s clubs.
