Port plays its part in future of clean energy from wind farm
Shields Gazette
|September 26, 2025
South Tyneside-based Port of Tyne has signed a groundbreaking deal that will see it play a major role in the construction of the world's biggest offshore wind farm.
Matt Beeton, chief executive at Port of Tyne, Jason Leddon, from ørsted, Craig Morton, commercial director at the Port of Tyne, and Kim McGuinness.
Danish firm Ørsted has agreed to lease up to 100,000m of land at the Port's Tyne Clean Energy Park in South Shields - and turn it into a specialist parts hub.
It will use the site to bring together secondary steel components, which will then be shipped to the Hornsea 3 wind farm site and installed.
The £8.3billion Hornsea 3 infrastructure scheme sits 160 miles off the Yorkshire coast and is seen as a crucial part of the UK's green energy transition and energy security future.
When completed, it is expected to provide enough clean energy to power more than three million homes.
The agreement with Ørsted will support the delivery of 197 wind turbines that will power the wind farm.
