Shields Gazette
|November 15, 2025
More than a quarter of people convicted of a crime in South Tyneside went on to be convicted for further offences with two years, new figures show.
Ministry of Justice data shows 196 of the 767 people convicted of a crime in 2023 in the borough have since gone on to reoffend - a rate of 25.6%.
This was slightly higher than the 24.5% rate a year earlier, but lower than the 38.5% rate 10 years ago.
It was also slightly lower than the 27.4% national rate.
Helen Dyson, interim chief executive at social justice charity Nacro, said it was "no surprise" reoffending was rising.
