Millions sign petition against cards' introduction

So far, more than 2.6 million people have signed a petition against the introduction of digital ID cards.

Organisers demand the Government immediately commits to not introducing a digital ID cards, adding: "We think this would be a step towards mass surveillance and digital control, and that no one should be forced to register with a state-controlled ID system. We oppose the creation of any national ID system.

"ID cards were scrapped in 2010, in our view for good reason."

Petitions that receive more than 100,000 signatures are considered for a debate in parliament, but there is little evidence of them shaping policy.
