Average A-level results sparks a call for action from teaching unions

Average A-level results by students in South Tyneside fell below last year's points score, new figures show.

Data from the Department for Education show the average point score for A-level students in the borough in the last academic year was 30.8-slightly down on last year's average of 31.8.

The figures also show 84.5% of students in the borough achieved at least two A-levels-with the average grade being C, down from C+ a year earlier.

The average point score improved marginally, from 35.6 in 2023-24 to 35.9, while the average grade remained at B-.

The average score across the North East was 33.4.

Teaching unions say the results come as "schools and colleges continue to battle against funding and staff shortages", and after students had their early school experiences disrupted by the pandemic.

They also want action over large regional variations in the results.
