British Steel announces it is ending redundancies consultation

BRITISH Steel is closing its consultation on redundancies, with its interim chief commercial officer describing its workers as “the finest in the world”.

On March 27, British Steel had announced a consultation on the timing of closures of its blast furnaces, wider steelmaking operations and potential reduction of its steel rolling mill capacity in Scunthorpe. Its earliest scenario saw the blast furnaces threatened with closure as soon as early June, and up to 2,700 jobs were directly affected.

The consultation move came as the company's owners, Jingye Group, did not accept a £500m government support package offer for plans to transition to greener steelmaking.

The Government took control to direct the company, but have not nationalised it, after Parliament was recalled on April 12, to pass emergency legislation.

Since the Government's direction takeover, new coking coal has been brought in and British Steel is under new leadership.
