Tributes to 'kind couple' killed in tram disaster

THE heartbroken families of a British couple killed in the Lisbon funicular crash paid tribute to them yesterday, calling them selfless, kind and caring.

Kayleigh Gillian Smith, 36, and her partner William Nelson, 44, were pictured smiling on one of the city's famous trams shortly before the fatal crash just after 6pm on Wednesday.

The pair and a third, as yet unnamed, Briton, aged 82, were among 16 people who lost their lives.

It is believed a steel cable snapped, sending the tram car hurtling down a steep incline, before it derailed and smashed into a building on a corner.
