BRITAIN’S welfare state was founded by good people who wanted to ensure that losing your job or your health does not catapult you into destitution.

The country can take pride in the construction of a social safety net, which is still absent in much of the world. The system comes at great expense to the taxpayer and it is vital that it is not abused.
