Van driver distracted by phone admits to killing top academic

AVAN driver under the influence of cannabis who killed a leading academic out walking in the street will be sentenced next month.
Darren Gilmour had also been occupied with his mobile phone when his vehicle mounted the kerb to hit Dr William Noel in Edinburgh on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
Dr Noel tragically did not recover, dying 19 days later in hospital.
The 58-year-old had been visiting the capital to purchase rare books for Princeton University in Pennsylvania, USA, where he was the Associate Librarian for Special Collections.
Gilmour, 42, yesterday pleaded guilty to causing the death of the Cambridge University graduate by dangerous driving and will be sentenced next month.
Dr Noel originally from Yorkshire had been with two colleagues during the visit to Scotland.
The trio had been walking on the pavement back to their hotel when tragedy struck on Trinity Crescent in the north of the city at around 6pm.
