Toll of 1,000 cancer wait tragedies

THE Scottish Government has been slated after it was revealed more than 1,000 patients died while awaiting treatment for cancer in just five years.
More evidence emerged of the full-scale crisis via a freedom of information request by the Scottish Daily Express. According to Public Health Scotland, 1,328 died waiting for cancer treatment between April 2020 and March 2025. The worst year was 2023/24, with 286 deaths.
The figures were split into urgent and non-urgent referrals, with most patients referred as urgent. In one tragic case, a patient waited 510 days before passing away in 2023/24,
