Toast the end of winter and herald spring
Scottish Daily Express
|February 28, 2026
ANYONE else have that feeling that spring might be in the air?
The days seem just a little longer, the sky that tiny bit bluer, and a strange glowing orb has appeared in the sky. Whisper it but it might even be dry this weekend. I think we can all raise a glass to the arrival of the daffodils and an end to the weeks of torrential rain even if it's not quite played out yet.
I've got some perfect wines to lift your spirits and remind you of summer holidays — past and, with a little bit of luck, future. Light, crisp and dry whites with plenty of acidity, and a couple of rich warm reds, either with or without food, will bring the world to you. Rieslings, chenin blancs and sauvignon blancs, light, bright and minerally, are all a safe bet for a sunny white, perfect for drinking with food or sipping solo. While malbec and montepulciano, two big red grapes that rarely disappoint, will fire up your tastebuds.
