Mcllroy survives driving woes
RORY MCILROY survived an “abysmal” driving day to stay in the hunt for his home Open at Royal Portrush.
The Masters champion spent most of his time in the rough, hitting only two out of 14 fairways — his worst at The Open — in a one-under-par 70.
But on an opening day of wind and rain on the Antrim coast, the world No.2 was only three shots off the lead. Sky Sports analyst Paul McGinley said: “He has done OK today but his driving has been abysmal. How can he hit only two fairways?”
