Prison chiefs take 'lifesaving' actions after double tragedy

PRISON bosses are removing bunk beds from jail cells as part of a raft of changes following the deaths of two young people in custody.

Katie Allan and William Lindsay took their own lives while behind bars at Polmont Young Offenders Institute, near Falkirk.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) yesterday confirmed that it accepted all of the recommendations made by a sheriff, following a Fatal Accident Inquiry into their deaths.

The organisation said it is committed to a range of "enduring, impactful, and lifesaving" actions, including an overhaul of the suicide prevention policy.

There will also be additional support for young people in custody in their first 72 hours, as well as the removal of bunk beds and other ligature points.
