Military housing improvements 'will make homes cheaper to live in'
Scottish Daily Express
|June 23, 2025
HOUSING for military personnel is set for a major upgrade to make it more environmentally friendly and cheaper to live in.
Ministers want to build self-sufficient homes and revamp “unacceptable” service accommodation.
The properties would significantly reduce energy prices for troops and their families, a minister has told the Express.
Over the years, personnel have had to endure mould and damp, leaky roofs and broken boilers, which has significantly contributed to the forces' retention crisis.
Al Carns, minister for veterans and people, said: “It’s a once-in-ageneration plan. We're talking about really low energy costs, self-sufficient, well-insulated, so the costs for service personnel go right down.”
Eco-friendly
The Ministry of Defence has been working towards eco-friendly homes for troops in recent years, including net-zero carbon properties in Gloucestershire.
