Driver is suspected of tailgating ambulance to get through roadblock
A DRIVER who ploughed into crowds at Liverpool FC's victory parade was last night being quizzed on suspicion of attempted murder and drug-driving.
The 53-year-old white man from West Derby, Liverpool, is suspected of tailgating an ambulance through a roadblock as paramedics rushed to treat a supporter who was feared to be having a heart attack during Monday's street celebrations.
A steward correctly moved a road block vehicle to let the 999 crew through but before they could re-close the cordon the Ford Galaxy car also raced into Water Street. Fans caught up in the carnage that followed say questions must be asked over the safety of Monday’s seven-mile Premier League title parade where one million fans had gathered.
Merseyside Police’s Det Chief Supt Karen Jaundrill said there were 65 casualties - 50 needed hospital care and 11 remained there last night. All were said to be stable and recovering.‘The driver was quizzed on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and drug driving.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: “It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car was able to follow an ambulance on to Water Street after the roadblock was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public.
“There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place.”
Messages of support flooded in to the people of Liverpool.
The King said: “I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.” Meanwhile the Prince and Princess of Wales said they were “deeply saddened”, adding: “What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy.”
