The 148th Open returned to Antrim’s coast after a 68-year wait in 2019 but McIlroy took a quadruple-bogey eight on the first hole on his way to missing the cut, as Shane Lowry went on to seal victory.
But McIlroy will be back in July as only one of only six men to complete the career Grand Slam.
