Floris leaves more than 22,000 homes still without power

MORE than 22,000 homes across Scotland remained without electricity yesterday as engineers worked around the clock to restore power following the trail of destruction left by Storm Floris.

Large swathes of the north and north west of the country were badly affected by the tempest, which saw gale force winds hit 90mph.

The storm struck mid-morning on Monday and lasted around 12 hours.

It caused chaos across the country affecting train, roads, ferry and plane services, but there does not appear to have been any serious injuries or fatalities.

Energy companies revealed the extent of damage which the storm had caused to supplies.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said it had now restored power to 50,000 properties.

Graeme Keddie, the company's director of corporate affairs, told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme: "I think Storm Floris was unusual both in terms of time of year but also the prolonged nature and that has caused impact across the network.

"It is mainly tree-related damage. We have helicopters going out and we've also got line patrols just to look at some of those areas where we've got multiple points of damage just to look at how complex the repairs will be."
