Keeper aims to own No.1 spot after tough summer
ANGUS GUNN was injured, without a club and unsure if he would play for Scotland again.
His future was up in the air this summer in a worrying period for the big keeper.
But against Denmark in Copenhagen in Friday night’s opening World Cup qualifier, he got his reward in the 0-0 draw.
Gunn’s previous appearance was a disaster for all concerned.
At the start of June, he’d decided to leave Norwich City at the end of his contract and was aiming to impress in a Hampden friendly with Iceland.
Instead, Gunn hobbled off after just seven minutes and was replaced by young Cieran Slicker in a debut to forget as Steve Clarke’s side lost 3-1.
But Gunn’s pain wasn’t just physical.
Mentally, he had to deal with the fact that clubs were unlikely to sign him when he wasn’t fit.
So he faced a hugely uncertain time, not knowing where he’d end up and if he’d lost his Scotland place for good.
But the 29-year-old — who played a huge part in getting Clarke’s side to Euro 2024 — has fought back to earn a deal at English Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest.
He expects game time to be limited at the City Ground as he fights it out with Brazilian John Victor as competition for firstchoice Matz Sels, of Belgium.
But Gunn is at least operating at a top level again. And what he’s done previously convinced Clarke to put his faith in him for match with the Danes.
