Cambridge Uni wins rowing trademark fight

A ROWING business has lost a bitter battle with Cambridge University after it claimed copyright of the city's name.

Omar Terywall, owner of Cambridge Rowing Ltd, said he unwittingly began the four-year fight when he applied for a trademark for a logo in 2022.

The Intellectual Property Office has now ruled in the university's favour, citing the “likelihood of confusion” between the two.

IPO officer Rosie Le Breton added there was “no doubt” Cambridge Rowing Ltd would benefit unfairly from the “resulting reputation and image of prestige”. But Mr Terywall plans to appeal after discovering the university has a trademark on the word “Cambridge”.
