Are threadworms causing problems with my bowels?

My bowels have been erratic for the last year, so I've just had a colonoscopy.

This showed I had a few diverticula, but also a threadworm in the right side of my colon, which surprised me, as I've had no itching around my back passage. I've been advised to get treatment from my GP, but is this necessary? Or could it be causing my unpredictable motions?

Threadworms, sometimes also called pinworms, are as their name suggests, tiny thin worms between 2-13 mm long, that live in the large intestine, mainly in the lower portion.
