HER novels were nicknamed “Aga Sagas” for portrayal s of British middle-class domestic life but they were not quite as cosy as her critics sometimes claimed.

Joanna Trollope herself described them as “often subversive and bleak” as they tackled themes of broken relationships, difficult family dynamics, love and betrayal.
As one of the nation’s most widely read authors, Trollope published more than 30 novels during a writing career that began in 1980, at first under the pseudonym Caroline Harvey, the first names of her paternal grandparents.
