"She Can Lead, Fly, and Discover-But Still Must Look Pretty: How Society Measures Women"

Punjab Times (English Edition)

|

June 06, 2025

In the contemporary society, women have shown that they can do anything.

They are flying fighter jets, leading countries, winning prestigious science awards, and running major corporations. From the military to the laboratory, from politics to space exploration, women have stepped into roles once considered too challenging, too demanding, or too “unsuitable” for them. The outdated beliefs that women are too emotional for leadership, too fragile for war, or too disinterested in science no longer hold true-if they ever did. Across the globe, women are proving that they are strong, intelligent, and more than capable in every field once dominated by men.

Despite these significant advancements, an uncomfortable truth remains. Even after breaking barriers and making history, women still face an unfair and persistent reality: society continues to tell them, in one way or another, “Don't forget to look beautiful.” No matter how far women climb in their careers or how much they contribute to society, advertisements, films, and social media repeatedly send a message that appearance is still their most important asset. This creates a striking contradiction. While women are celebrated for their hard work and talent, the same culture often judges them by how they look. A woman might win an election, but the media may focus more on her dress than her policy ideas. A woman could discover a life-saving drug, yet still be expected to smile for the camera and wear make up for the magazine cover. Her intelligence and accomplishments are often discussed alongside, or even overshadowed by, her physical appearance.
