A Curious Irony
-
It remains one of history's strangest twists - Pakistan came into being almost effortlessly, as if conjured by a flick of the political wrist.
Jawaharlal Nehru once quipped, with biting irony, that its architects secured their prize "without so much as rumpling the crease of their trousers." The remark still hangs in the air like a wry smile a reminder that while India bled, bargained, and broke itself apart, the other side appeared to glide into nationhood with scarcely a bead of sweat to show for it. A perceptive scribe stumbled upon a rare and telling fragment of history, an intimate glimpse into the hidden mechanics of India's Partition. Intrigued, the editor of a leading daily turned to R. C. Mody, a man whose memory still holds the living pulse of 1947, and urged him to recount this untold chapter. What followed was not a dry chronicle, but a firsthand tapestry of political maneuvering, whispered strategies, and ironies too sharp to be invented, the real story behind the drawing of borders that changed the subcontinent forever.
Editor requested R.C. Mody, who was a young man of 21 in 1947 and remembers those fateful days with remarkable clarity-to place this photograph within the atmosphere of India at the time. Over the years, Mody has contributed numerous firsthand recollections to his website, each a window into the turbulent months when India's destiny was being rewritten.
