Unlike traditional cloud computing, which sends data to distant servers for processing, edge computing processes data closer to its source-whether it's a smartphone, a security camera, or a self-driving vehicle. As India continues its ambitious digital transformation journey, edge computing is silently powering many of the changes we see around us, from smart cities to healthcare innovations. It is not just an evolution in computing; it's a shift in how we perceive speed, intelligence, and data responsiveness in everyday life.

The concept of edge computing isn't entirely new, but its relevance has grown sharply in the past decade. In the early 2000s, most data was managed in centralized data centres. Then came cloud computing, offering scalable resources via the internet. While the cloud brought flexibility and power, it also introduced latency - the time delay in sending and receiving data from remote servers. This lag became a problem as industries began using real time technologies such as autonomous cars, live health monitors, and Internet of Things (loT) devices. That's where edge computing made its entry. By decentralizing processing power and placing it closer to the source of data, edge computing reduces delays, increases efficiency, and enhances user experiences.

So, how does edge computing actually work? Imagine a smart traffic light in a busy Indian city. If it relies solely on the cloud to analyse traffic flow, there could be delays in response due to network congestion or distance. But if the light is equipped with an edge device - a local processor-it can instantly analyse camera feeds, detect congestion, and adjust timing in real time. Essentially, edge computing pushes the brainpower of computing from the centre (cloud) to the edge (devices and gateways), minimizing the time taken to make decisions. The result is faster, more reliable services that adapt quickly to changing conditions.
