Motorist turns the tables on hijacker in Bayview

IN A DRAMATIC turn of events, a motorist in Bayview defended himself against a hijacker, resulting in the suspect's death and raising concerns about rising crime in the community

The "quick-thinking" motorist returned fire and shot and killed the balaclava-clad hijacker during the botched hijacking.

His accomplice fled the scene.

Brandon Pillay, the chairperson of the Bayview Community Police Forum (CPF), said they were concerned about the increase in hijackings and theft of motor vehicles.

“The CPF was alerted to the attempted hijacking via WhatsApp groups last Tuesday. Upon arrival, we established that the victim was safe and unharmed, while one suspect was shot and was lying on the road with a firearm. Paramedics confirmed that he had died.

“We are glad that the victim is safe and unharmed, especially since the hijackers opened fire on him. It was his quick-thinking and swift action that saved his life.”

He said the community was concerned about the increase in theft of motor vehicles.

"It cannot be that communities must live in fear of their lives and lose their hard earned assets.

“Enough is enough. Law enforcement and communities will fight back.”
