OVERSIGHT failures in building regulations are killing people. Municipalities must act before the next collapse.

The collapse of the four-storey structure adjacent to the New Ahobilam Temple of Protection in Redcliffe, Verulam, claiming at least five lives, is not an isolated tragedy.
It is part of a deadly pattern in South Africa where non-adherence to building regulations and poor oversight by municipal authorities repeatedly cost lives.
This tragedy was preventable. Yet, as in so many past disasters, authorities failed to enforce the rules, and human lives were snuffed out.
South Africa's construction sector has a grim record of collapses that should have served as warnings.
