100% matric pass rate meaningless without solid foundation

THE KwaZulu-Natal Education Department must not aim for surface-level matric success.

The department’s ambition for a 100% matric pass rate sounds impressive, but it can mask deeper systemic issues. If pupils are pushed through the system without mastering foundational skills, the final results are hollow.
Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka has announced a pushy plan to elevate matric pass rates to at least 95% by 2025, yet this goal is not met without scrutiny from various education stakeholders who question the effectiveness of a target-driven approach amid significant learning challenges.
He proclaimed the start of the academic year as “buoyant”, attributing the positivity to the strong performance of the Class of 2024.
