Adv Mukoma Maiwashe, who represents Johannes Shokane, who is facing charges related to insurance-related murders, brought an application before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court last Tuesday, to have his client undergo a mental health assessment to determine his fitness fit to stand trial or proceed with bail application.

Shokane is the brother of former police officer Rachel Shokane-Kutumela and Annah Shokane, and the uncle of Florah Shokane, who were arrested in October 2024 for the murders of nine people in order to receive insurance payouts amounting to approximately R10m.
