'n Blik op Downsindroom

Wanneer 'n ouerpaar hoor daar is 'n baba op pad, ervaar hulle dikwels gemengde emosies - van opgewondenheid en hoop tot angs en onsekerheid. Een van die mees algemene vrese is of die baba gesond sal wees en normaal sal ontwikkel.
Hoewel die meeste babas gesond gebore word, gebeur dit soms dat tekens van 'n genetiese afwyking reeds tydens swangerskap na vore kom. Oktober is Downsindroombewusmakingsmaand, en geneesheer dr. Paul Vorster gesels meer oor dié toestand.
"Downsindroom is 'n genetiese afwyking waar die baba gebore word met 'n ekstra chromosoom," verduidelik hy. "Normaalweg het 'n mens 23 pare chromosome, dus 46 in totaal. Babas met die sindroom het egter 'n ekstra chromosoom 21, wat beteken hulle het 47 chromosome."
Hoewel die presiese oorsaak nie altyd duidelik is nie, speel die ma se ouderdom wel 'n rol. Die kans op Downsindroom neem toe namate die ma ouer raak.
