NAMHLA MONAKALI A JOURNO'S VOICE

- NAMHLA MONAKALI

As we reach the final edition of our publication for 2025, many of us are taking stock of the year behind us and the year waiting ahead. This moment on the calendar is a natural pause, the kind that asks who we have been, who we are becoming and how our choices shape the communities we call home. Every community is built on decisions, and the older I get, the more I realise that our choices are never isolated. They reach backwards and forwards, touching the people before us and the people coming after us.

This year reminded me how deeply connected we are across generations. My reporting moved between youth issues, community safety, social programmes, homelessness and the resilience of everyday residents.

In every story, I found myself in a familiar middle ground, young enough to understand the urgency of the youth, yet old enough to appreciate the wisdom and memory held by the elderly. It is a space many young adults occupy without recognising its significance.

I have become convinced that our communities cannot move forward unless we treat this middle space as a bridge. Young people, with their energy and imagination, are shaping futures at a rapid pace.

A new catalyst for change

The energy was palpable at Newlands Cricket Ground on Thursday 13 November as hundreds of women from across South Africa converged for the Women in Festival 2025, transforming the venue into both a celebration of empowerment and a launching pad for coordinated action against gender-based violence (GBV).
