WE REVISIT DEREK PARKER’S RAMBLES THROUGH RENFREWSHIRE

Well quenched Buddies’ thirst

‘The Bonnie Wee Well on the Gleniffer Braes above Paisley is most Buddies’ favourite landmark.

Financed by the Old Weavers’ Society and unveiled in 1883 by Robert Cochran, treasurer of Paisley Town Council, the well commemorates Glasgow writer Hugh Macdonald (1817-60), who worked as a calico printer at Paisley’s Colinslee Works and immortalised the beauty ofthe Braesin books and poems.

For several years, strolls to the Bonnie Wee Well were popular among families, who climbed the steep slope from Nethercraigsto the ornamental fountain, whose sparkling waters were imbibed froma metal cup.
