Silent walls, regal past: Enduring legacy of Motimahal

Motimahal, nestled within the royal palace of Bhawanipatna — the former capital of the Kalahandi princely state — continues to evoke awe with its historic charm. Once the grand Durbar Hall, it now stands as a silent witness to many untold stories of the region’s regal past.

Constructed between 1930 and 1935, Motimahal served as the ceremonial court where the Maharaja of Kalahandi presided from a jewelled throne. Adorned with diamonds, pearls, gold and other precious stones, the throne bore the Maharaja’s name intricately engraved upon it. Two golden lion statues flanked the throne, which stood between two ivory columns, framing a grand mirror. The palace walls were embellished with a majestic sculpture of a tiger, among other decorative elements.
