The Supreme Court Monday, while expressing deep concern over the perverse nature of some contents being aired on social media and over-the-top (OTT) platforms, issued a notice to Centre on a plea seeking restrictions on the streaming of such contents on these platforms which can harm children and adolescents, potentially encouraging risky sexual behaviours.

However, the bench of Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih refused to pass any order, as sought by the petitioner, stating that it is either for the legislature or the executive to come out with measures to deal with the issue. “This is not within our domain. As it is, there is lot of allegation that we are encroaching upon the legislative and executive powers,” Justice Gavai said. It is obvious that the learned justice was hinting at the criticisms the top court faced following the judgement in the Tamil Nadu Governor vs MK Stalin government case which was dubbed as judicial excess by some BJP leaders
