Villagers to pay 182% more after council tax was set 'artificially low'

RESIDENTS in Radcliffe-on-Trent face a 182% hike in the council tax they pay for village services after parish councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of the rise.

Villagers to pay 182% more after council tax was set 'artificially low'

The controversial decision was made at a meeting of the council on Tuesday which was held to discuss the parish's 2026/2027 budget and was attended by a number of concerned members of the public.

A public document explaining the rise states that “serious errors” from the previous budget for 2025/2026 needed to be corrected - with last year’s council tax set “artificially low".

Parish council chair, Councillor Anne McLeod, said that these errors included anticipating receiving grant funding which had not even been applied for when the budget was set.

The grants did not end up being received by the council.

Councillor McLeod added that for several years, the council tax had not gone up at all, which was “crackers” considering the rise in its highest cost. In addition to other outgoings, £96,886 has been earmarked for ‘land and open spaces’, £85,942 for The Grange Hall community centre, £112,814 for Wharf Lane recreation ground and £24,042 for Cliff Walk.
