The police say city streets are safe, but not everyone agrees

During a walk across Nottingham city centre, Temporary Chief Constable Steve Cooper and Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden spoke to stallholders at the city’s Winter Wonderland and other business owners on Tuesday.

They were also joined by Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan, following a high-profile machete confrontation in full view of those enjoying Winter Wonderland in Old Market Square on Sunday, November 16.

TCC Cooper and Mr Godden reassured people that the city centre is safe during the walk, but some residents told the Post they don’t believe this is the case.

Kenzie Edwards, 17, is a student at Nottingham College and explained that he “can’t walk down the street without feeling worried”.

He said: “We don’t feel safe in the city centre. You see all these stabbings and wonder how much more pleading it’s going to take until the government actually take action and makes our streets safe again.

“You walk out of the house and don’t know who's going to be around the corner and what's going to happen to you. It’s crazy. I've lived here all my life, and I don’t feel like anywhere in Nottingham is safe. There are children out there who are forced into selling drugs and are robbed of a healthy future.

“Mothers are burying their children - it’s not on. People like the ones involved in the machete confrontation make Nottingham look like a bad place, but deep down, I know the city is a good place.
