Rolls-Royce wins contract to help usher in ‘new era for nuclear power'

DERBY-BASED Rolls-Royce (RR) has seen off industry competition to provide small modular nuclear (SMR) technology to the UK.

Each Rolls-Royce SMR factory-built nuclear power plant will generate enough stable, low-carbon electricity to power a million homes for 60-plus years, using a radically new approach to deploying proven nuclear technology.

Identifying the company as its preferred partner, with contracts to be signed later in the year, the Government says that it is a "new era for nuclear power".

The £2.5 billion Great British Energy - Nuclear project could support up to 3,000 jobs at peak construction.
