MORE EVIDENCE GATHERED AS INQUIRY CONSULTS THE CPS

- By JOEL MOORE

A MAJOR police investigation into Nottingham hospital maternity wards has been expanded to consider potential crimes under the Abortion Act.

Nottinghamshire Police began the probe into Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), which runs the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, two years ago after hundreds of deaths and injuries in its maternity wards.

The investigation, Operation Perth, runs in tandem with the independent review of maternity services, which is examining about 2,500 cases - the largest NHS review in history.

Since last summer, it has also been examining whether NUH had caused deaths through “grossly negligent” management - corporate manslaughter.
