Millions spent on inquiries but it is galling to see no one facing a criminal charge

NOTHER scandal, another inquiry report. Millions more words, countless millions of pounds spent - and still something missing.

Allow me to recite a few facts and figures:

THE POST OFFICE AND HORIZON

■Hundreds of hardworking sub-postmasters wrongly prosecuted over a faulty computer system that gave the impression they had been fiddling the books.

■Thirteen people take their own lives as a result

■More than a billion pounds of public money paid in compensation so far

■Three years to reach stage one of the inquiry - costing at least £50 million so far.

■Stage two to look at blame - but inquiry chairman says senior Post Office staff and Fujitsu staff knew the software contained bugs.

THE INFECTED BLOOD SCANDAL

■More than 30,000 people given blood products contaminated with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s.
