Finances improve, but tax rise could still go to the max

NOTTINGHAM City Council says it is “likely” the authority will be increasing council tax by the maximum allowed again next year.

The Labour-run authority is currently assuming it will increase the tax by 4.99% - the maximum allowed before a council has to hold a local referendum.

The possibility of another maximum council tax hike in Nottingham has been raised as the city council presents its budget plans for the coming financial year, beginning in April.

The city council says the overall financial picture for the authority is much better than previous years, with debt having come down and budget gaps being slashed.

Yet with a £15 million package of investments planned next year, the city's leaders argue a council tax rise will help to support “things that really matter to people”.
