Budget cut leaves legal advice charity facing £100k shortfall

A CHARITY helping people facing eviction and soaring debt is struggling to meet “exceptional” demand after Nottingham City Council slashed its funding in half.

Nottingham Law Centre, which offers free legal advice on issues including benefits and immigration, is facing a £100,000 shortfall in its budget for this financial year, ending in April 2026.

Two Nottinghamshire MPs have raised the alarm about the crisis facing the charity, which says it does not want to turn anyone away.

Formerly known as the Hyson Green Law Centre, the charity was established in 1983.

Law centres have existed since the early 1970s as charities operating on a not-for-profit basis. The centre offers free, confidential and independent advice to all those living and working in Nottingham, including helping those going to court to face possession proceedings.

A spokesperson for the centre said: “We are seeing increasing numbers of clients in desperate circumstances who are facing eviction, destitution and unmanageable debt.
