Approval granted for university to provide stand-in for rotting building

A DECISION has been made on a stand-in for a rotting university building closed for more than a year due to fears it could collapse.

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) was forced to close and board off the Lyth Building at its Southwell-based Brackenhurst Campus in April last year.

The structure, which houses research laboratories for agricultural studies, teaching rooms and a 200-capacity lecture theatre, was only completed in 2020, and cost £11.5 million.

Named East Midlands Building of the Year by the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2022, it has been closed for more than a year due to wet rot in its timber sections.

While building contractors are still working on how to tackle the wood-destroying fungi, Newark and Sherwood District Council has approved a stop-gap measure for students.
