Airport defends new rapid drop-off zone despite charge fears

MP CRITICISES LACK OF ON-SITE PAYMENT OPTIONS AND CALLS FOR MORE TIME TO PAY
EAST Midlands Airport says its new drop-off system has been a “significant improvement” - despite some users saying they are not being given enough time, or a reminder, to pay the fee.
The changes to the airport's parking system mean it is now cashless and barrier-less, as car number plates are automatically logged in when visiting the airport to drop off passengers.
Motorists using the rapid drop-off pay £5 for up to 15 minutes and are given until midnight the day after their visit to pay the charge online or by phone. But if they miss that period, the charge can go up to £100.
There is no option to pay at the airport itself, with payment only possible online or by phone.
MP Amanda Hack, whose North West Leicestershire constituency covers the airport, said users had raised issues with her regarding the rapid drop-off zone.
Speaking during a recent parliamentary debate, the Labour MP described the airport as a vital regional asset, but warned that many passengers had no realistic alternative to travelling by car.
As a result, she said, “an estimated 91% of passengers arrive at East Midlands Airport by car”.
