India faces WTO scrutiny over import curbs, quality control

India has come under fresh scrutiny at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over its import restrictions and quality control orders, with several members questioning if New Delhi's measures related to pulses, tyres and air conditioners constituted trade barriers.

India featured prominently in a draft report for 2025 released on Thursday by the WTO's committee on market access among countries whose policies were challenged.
Per the report, India’s quantitative restrictions on pulses came under repeated scrutiny from Australia, Canada and the European Union (EU).
Its quality control orders (QCO) on tyres and air conditioners also attracted queries from the EU, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and Thailand, which argued that such measures could limit market access and increase the compliance burden for exporters.
