India has climbed three spots in the Human Development Index (HDI), ranking 130 in 2023, up from 133 in 2022, according to a UN Development Programme (UNDP) report released on Tuesday.

- Rhik Kundu

India's HDI score rose from 0.676 to 0.685, keeping the country in the medium human development category but edging it closer to the high development threshold of 0.700. India's score is the same as Bangladesh (0.685), higher than Nepal (0.622) and Pakistan (0.544), and trails Sri Lanka (0.776) and Bhutan (0.698).

The HDI measures long-term progress in three key dimensions of human development: health, education and standard of living.
