For NRIs, taxation of mutual fund redemptions is specific. Units of equity-oriented MFs, such as a flexi cap scheme, are considered long-term assets when held for over 12 months. On redemption, gains above ₹1.25 lakh are taxed at 12.5% plus surcharge and cess. The fund house needs to deduct this tax at source before remitting the redemption proceeds.
