Mehbooba, Sajjad Lone claim they are placed under house arrest

Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and Peoples' Conference chief Sajad Lone on Thursday said they were placed under house arrest to stop them from visiting Sopore to offer condolences following the death of former Hurriyat Conference chairman Abdul Gani Bhat.

Mufti wrote on X that the restrictions were imposed "simply to stop us from visiting Sopore to offer condolences on the demise of Professor Abdul Gani Bhat", calling it a reflection of the "harsh and undemocratic reality" in Jammu and Kashmir. Bhat, who had been ailing for some time, died at his Sopore residence on Wednesday evening.
