Mayon, Kanlaon continue to be restive

Kanlaon emitted voluminous ash, while two pyroclastic density current (PDC) events, or "uson" were recorded at Mayon, both on Friday, Feb. 27, as the two volcanoes continued to be restive with authorities warning residents living around the area to remain vigilant.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded ash emission from Kanlaon from 9:43 a.m. to 10:53 a.m., generating grayish plumes that rose about 1,000 meters above the summit crater before drifting south.

The activity was captured by an IP camera installed at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City.

The ash emission was part of the volcano's ongoing unrest after a moderately explosive eruption recorded on Feb. 26, which prompted state volcanologists to closely assess monitoring parameters.

Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, indicating increased unrest and the possibility of sudden explosive eruptions.

Then in the afternoon, at 12:40 p.m., Phivolcs reported the increased activity at Mayon following collapses from lava flows along the Bonga Gully.

The first PDC was followed by another at 2:05 p.m., each lasting about one minute.
